Kirstenbosch Orange Breasted Sunbirds

We had some frustration with sunbirds at Giant’s Castle. I was hoping that we’d get a chance at a different variety in the Cape – Orange Breasted Sunbirds. Perhaps I’m biased, but orange is my favourite colour!

Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens is nestled under Table Mountain. It’s a great location for bird photography as the birds are quite used to having people around. We were extremely lucky in finding the prime spot for Orange Breasted Sunbirds after a short hike up the paths, and we settled in for a good session. The birds were feeding on various flowers and were completely unconcerned by our presence. I got some of my favourite photos that afternoon.

Monopods were essential, as the birds  were flitting around at head-height and move far too quickly to catch otherwise. I love my monopod for the increased stability and giving my poor arms a break!

The sun came and went, so we had periods of harsh light and shadow between lovely soft light, which was better for bringing out the colours in the male birds iridescent heads. Every now and then one would shoot right past us up the hill in a whir of little wings.

We only spent one afternoon at Kirstenbosch, and I’d love to spend more time there someday. Nevertheless, it was an extremely productive afternoon, and I have endless photos to process still!

I’ve recently added to my society6 store, and there’s a promotion on at the moment that gives you $5 off and free shipping. You can even get a rug that has a beautiful Orange-Breasted Sunbird on it! (I’m tempted)

Have a great week, everyone.
