Base W – Antarctica Teaser #4

Detaille_DSF7829-Edit6x4WEB

Looking out from Base W, Detaille Island, Lallemand Fjord.

Base W was occupied during the International Geophysical Year, and was abandoned after inclement weather prevented the supply ship from reaching it for two years in a row. The occupants packed essentials only, and left. It is preserved exactly was it was then, and provides an insight to the lives of Antarctic researchers in the late 1950’s. The Base is now cared for and maintained by the expedition ships that manage to visit it.

We had perfect weather for our landing on Detaille Island, and enjoyed slogging through snow that was knee to thigh deep in some places. The sun was piercingly bright, spilling through the windows into the Base and casting stark shadows.
