Antarctica Teaser #6 – Penguin Footprints

PenguinFeet_EAW_1423-Edit6x4WEB A memory that is very clear for me is the sound of penguin footsteps – on snow, rock, mud – pattering along with an industrious determination. They seem so serious and intent. I wanted to make a portrait of a penguin that didn’t include the penguin itself, and these Gentoo penguin footprints pressed into the snow on Petermann Island were perfect. The colours below the snow, the pinks and greens, are algae that bloom during the summer. The pressure of little penguin feet compacts them, and makes the colours more vibrant. Antarctica is home to some of the harshest conditions on earth, but life thrives down there, season after season.
