Winter Gardens

In the middle of winter, there’s nothing like escaping into the tropical heat of a greenhouse and losing yourself amidst the bright rainforest plants. The Winter Gardens in the Auckland Domain are beautiful year-round, and my favourite time to visit the tropical house is when the weather outside is chilly. I’d recommend a visit!

The colours and textures of the plants are amazing, and they especially pop on a grey day. I’ve used a macro lens in the Winter Gardens before, but to get all the contrasting textures and patterns I went for the Fuji X100 with its fixed 23mm f/2 lens. A fast lens is a must inside a greenhouse that is bursting with foliage – it can get quite dark!

This last image isn’t from the Winter Gardens, but it fit well with the other two. I often get asked if I photograph anything other than birds, and the answer is a resounding yes! I love making images, and I’ll photograph anything that catches my eye.Gardens_DSF0683-Edit6x4WEB

Have a great week, I’ll see you on Sunday!
