Welcome Swallows

This past week has been an exciting one for me. In the space of a few days I’ve achieved a few photographic goals that I’ve had for some time. The first was photographing Welcome Swallows in flight at Sulphur Point on Lake Rotorua. They’re extremely swift birds, and my previous attempts have been nothing but hopeless. They have a roosting tree that they return to after sweeping over the lake to catch midges (which are out in full force at this time of year). Out of practice at lifting and holding up the 200-400mm lens, I had a lot of frustrating moments where my arms just wouldn’t co-operate. It may have meant standing in the bitter rain for an hour or so, but I managed some shots that I’m quite proud of, and I’ll definitely be returning there to have another crack at it.

Next week, more fun I’ve been having while on break from University.
