Summer Evenings

Somewhere over the course of the past month, the Wednesday blogs have morphed into full-on blog posts, instead of short updates. Now that I’m in the middle of exams, I can’t quite sustain this and my buffer of blog posts has run out.

It’s been nice to engage with you all more than once a week, and I’d like to keep going with bi-weekly updates. I hope you’ve been enjoying them as much as I have writing them! So until I have more time to write, Wednesday blogs will go back to the short photo-update style that they initially were.

That aside, here’s today’s update.

Losing an hour of sleep is big – especially if you’re a student in the middle of assignment madness. But the switch over of Daylight Savings at the end of winter is one of my favourite times of year. Overnight, evenings become longer and lighter. My lectures usually finish at 6pm, and walking home in the dark is never that much fun. Being able to enjoy the last warm rays on my way home makes the end of the day so much nicer, and I like spending some time wandering aimlessly in the park instead of heading straight home.

Albert Park is a nice little haven next to the city campus (when it’s not thronged with graduates during graduation week!). There are massive, twisted old trees and well-tended flowerbeds that are home to what seems to be hundreds of Blackbirds! Despite being in the middle of the city, you can also hear Grey Warblers, Kingfisher, and Tui. If the weather is nice, it’s a great place to study instead of being stuck inside as well! I’m looking forward to our evenings getting longer and longer as we move into summer – it’s the perfect cure for exam blues.
